Roto Prep Supervisor

OVERVIEW

The Roto Prep Supervisor is responsible for the management and oversight of the prep team. They provide leadership, technical support, mentorship and training, and maintain best practices to ensure efficient workflows. Working in partnership with the compositing team, the Roto Prep Supervisor ensures that all elements are integrated to the highest quality standards. Additionally, the Roto Prep Supervisor is responsible for quality control of both internal and outsourced roto and prep submissions. This includes assisting with bidding, reviewing assigned tasks, providing progress reports to show producers, and responding to additional compositing requests. Their leadership and expertise will be essential in maintaining high standards of quality and ensuring that project deadlines are met.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • work in partnership with department managers to address issues, present strategies and establish solutions
  • provide department leadership and mentorship for those in leadership roles
  • establish best practices for prep and roto workflows to ensure efficiency and maintain the highest standards of quality
  • perform quality control checks on prep and roto submissions from both internal artists and outsource vendors
  • articulate notes in a well mannered way that artists and outsource partners can clearly understand
  • proactively troubleshoot and solve problems, work independently, and provide guidance for team members
  • provide annotations based on creative brief following turnover
  • maintain a consistent and effective QC process and collaborate with producers and department managers on QC schedules
  • assist with the design and execution of training programs for the prep and compositing departments
  • provide training for new compositors, junior artists and interns in the areas of roto and prep
  • attend turn over meetings and creative launches to identify and clearly communicate roto and paint requirements to the team
  • provide support and mentorship to the compositing team, junior artists and interns as it relates to roto and prep workflows
  • review and submit recommendations on bids as it relates to roto prep resources
  • participate in artist recruitment, reel and resume assessments, and attend interviews for the compositing and prep departments
  • participate in performance reviews and assist with artist development plans
  • support department morale and professional development

REQUIREMENTS

  • minimum 5 years of related compositing experience for feature quality VFX
  • intermediate to advanced experience with Nuke and Mocha; Silhouette knowledge is a plus but not required
  • intermediate compositing experience required
  • ability to receive and implement feedback quickly and effectively
  • experience training artists and being a mentor; previous management experience
  • strong written and oral communication, team player, and time management skills
  • ability to work independently with minimal supervision; strong troubleshooting and problem-solving; escalates issues as needed
  • must be willing to work flexible hours, including overtime and weekends, when necessary to meet project deadlines
