CharacterFX Supervisor

As the CharacterFX Supervisor you will be responsible for overseeing all tasks and output through the CFX Department to produce the highest quality standard possible, establish department protocols, improve efficiency, and work closely with the Creature Supervisor, LookDev Department, and Rigging Department. You will be responsible for overseeing the development of photo-realistic creatures including groom and sim setups for fur/hair, feathers, muscles, and skin. These key tasks will rely upon successful collaboration between VFX Supervisors, CG Supervisors, and fellow Department Supervisors. The CharacterFX Supervisor will work closely with the pipeline team and TD’s to improve efficiency, and determine best practices to both meet, and increase the quality standards expected by Spin and Spin’s clients. You will be a participant in creative concept initiatives, and Production development initiatives to support upcoming projects by collaborating early with fellow Department Supervisors and CG Supervisors. Finally, you will be responsible for refining the current skill set in the department and developing and introducing additional tools, components, and skills into the department alongside CFX TD’s, and Pipeline.

Your standard tasks will include:

  • Reviewing bid and scheduled time for artists during project and floor launches.
  • Mentor during, and lead dailies, rounds and department meetings.
  • Grooming hair, fur, feathers, and organic elements using Houdini.
  • Painting maps, modeling hair curves, modifying shaders, and optimizing grooms to improve render efficiency.
  • Running fur and cloth simulations in Houdini.
  • Setting up and running muscle and skin simulations in Houdini or Ziva.
  • Attending daily progress reviews to obtain feedback from supervisors.
  • Guide and support in delivering work on time, according to agreed schedules and specifications.
  • Defining, documenting, and communicating best practices and techniques for fur/hair/cloth/muscle development.
  • Participate in the department morale and culture.
  • Offer and participate in department initiatives with creative supervisors, and the pipeline team to ensure initiatives are met.
  • Communicating strongly and clearly enabling you to liaise between team members and other departments.
  • Operate using KatanaMari, Renderman, and/or Arnold (experience is a benefit but not a requirement).
  • Operate using Ziva, Houdini muscles or other muscle systems (experience is a benefit but not a requirement).
  • Ability to troubleshoot and solve problems independently.
  • Provide creative and technical feedback for artists.
  • Create video tutorials and/or wiki pages expanding the CFX workflow within the context of Spin’s pipeline.
  • Sit in on Show dailies and help provide creative and technical feedback alongside VFX supervisors.
  • Sit in on Show sequence launches and offer input to help determine the best approach for assets and shots.
  • Speak confidently and cohesively with clients.
  • Help production identify which tasks are best suited for each artist.
  • Identify CFX tools and pipeline needs and create the appropriate pipeline tickets.
  • Identify equipment and technology needs for the department and make the appropriate requests. 

Must have:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a CFX role in a VFX studio.
  • Previous experience in a Lead or Supervisor role.
  • Previous experience on CG creature projects.
  • Excellent knowledge of Maya.
  • Excellent knowledge of Houdini.
  • Experience in the following dynamic simulation: cloth, hair/fur, feathers, skin and muscle.
  • Some programming experience with Python, PySide, PyQt, VEX.
  • Some Programming experience with C++ for Maya and Houdini plug-ins, an asset.
  • Knowledge of 3D-related mathematics, an asset.
  • Experience in creating rig simulations.
  • Rigging skills and experience.
  • Self-driven, good communicator, and a great-team player.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to multi-task, balance priorities, and agile problem solving.
  • Strong communication, organizational, time management and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and solve problems independently
