Saving Bikini Bottom: How Spin Reimagined a 25-Year Animation Icon

Working on Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie was a unique opportunity for the Spin team to reimagine an animation icon as legendary as Mickey Mouse. It was a thrilling challenge as we aimed to capture every detail from SpongeBob’s 25-year legacy while staying true to his timeless charm.

Having contributed to over 500 shots and 300+ assets, we’re incredibly proud to call this feature a true labour of love, crafted by the talented artists at Spin. Under the guidance of Spin’s VFX Supervisor Kyle Menzies and Executive Producer George Macri, nearly every department – from Animation and FX to Lighting and Compositing – worked tirelessly to bring the vibrant world of Bikini Bottom to life.

“The creative process can often be serious business but tasks like a shot sculpting a ‘subtle’ crack peeking out of Patrick’s pants or creating a fully 3D take on an iconic Spongebob ‘drying out’ moment, not only makes that process lighter, but also rewarding” explained VFX Supervisor, Kyle Menzies while recalling the production process, “Starting every day with these critters on your monitor, made all the problem solving, toiling over details, and, artistic hoop jumping, more enjoyable for the entire crew!”, says VFX Supervisor, Kyle Menzies.

Saving Bikini Bottom is a hybrid film that blends live-action with extensive CG animation. Our mission was to keep the characters’ signature humour and wacky antics intact, and our animation crew, led by Head of Animation Peter Giliberti, worked tirelessly to perfect every gag.

“The entire team including me, watched all the original Spongebob episodes and previous films to make sure that we capture the true essence of Spongebob and nail the poses that everyone loves and remembers from the series. “However, during production, the guidance of Piero made it easier and easier to stay consistent with the humour and antics,” says Peter Giliberti about his process

The fully CG animated sequences showcased masterful rigging and character sculpting that enabled SpongeBob and Sandy Cheeks to perform anything imaginable! Being able to create whimsical assets, like a cow-sized fish, a tiny town inside an aquarium, and Wanda Sykes’s head on a retro robot, made this project an animator’s dream.

Yet none of these vibrant creatures and props would be as impactful without our outstanding FX team. From lush clouds to oceans of animated water and dynamic electricity-sparking armies of SpongeBob, every effect added depth and drama to the story.

“This was a challenging and rewarding show from an FX perspective, as we often had to tread a fine line between realism (both in regards to look and movement) and the outsized actions these sequences called for. It was a lot of fun to push shots as far as we could in a whimsical and stylized direction while at the same time striving to maintain some level of grounding within the aesthetic world the show had established.”, recalls our FX Supervisor, Tim Sibley.

While each department was instrumental in creating the stunning visuals on screen, special recognition goes to the Lighting and Compositing team for seamlessly bringing all elements together into a cohesive masterpiece.

And of course, none of this would have been possible without the vision and guidance of Animation Director Piero Piluso, VFX Producer Scott Puckett, and VFX Supervisor Mark Fattibene. Your unwavering support and trust inspired us to push creative boundaries that stand out on screen!
