Bringing the High-Stakes World of BET to Life at Spin VFX

We were thrilled to take on the challenge of blending two worlds – the visually charged style of the original Kakegurui anime with the grounded realism of live-action, in Netflix’s new series BET, guided by Showrunner Simon Barry. Our goal was to stay true to the anime’s bold spirit while building a fresh, cinematic visual identity for the show.

Our partnership with Simon Barry was one of the highlights of the project. His vision was clear and decisive, yet he remained open to collaboration, allowing us the freedom to push creative boundaries. His support made it possible for us to enhance the visual storytelling in bold and inventive ways.

“Our graphic work was a character in itself”, recalled Wesley Sewell, VFX Supervisor. “It was another way the filmmakers conceived for the characters to express their emotions to engage the audience. Working alongside Simon, we developed a fresh, original look for these treatments, which are featured throughout the show.”

To amplify the tension and heighten the drama of the show, we employed a range of graphic techniques including dynamic zooms, split screen treatments, and anime-style overlays.

“An enormous amount of R&D went into crafting both the on-screen graphics and the title sequences,” said Craig Kirkham, CCO of our sister company Jaxx. “The tone and colour palette we used are derived from St. Dominic’s school and its uniforms, as well as the original graphic novel. Certain elements incorporated within the titles offer the audience subtle clues about the upcoming episode, all framed within our recurring BET layout. It’s fun and dynamic, and I believe it is a great reflection of the show.”

Looking back, we’re incredibly proud of developing visual elements that expressed emotion and elevated key story moments. But none of it would have been possible without the incredible team of artists, producers, and supervisors behind the scenes helping us turn design, innovation, and storytelling into something truly memorable.
